In Dayton, Ohio, former employees of Fuyao Glass America Inc. gathered to share their troubling work experiences. Fuyao, a Chinese-linked glass manufacturer, operates in an old General Motors plant. The group met with U.S. Congressman Rep. Ro Khanna to discuss their grievances.
Workers’ Descriptions of Poor Conditions
Tiffany Moore, a former employee, described her three-year tenure at Fuyao as difficult. She expressed her struggle with unbearable heat within the factory, criticizing the company’s neglect of worker welfare. Moore shared her experience during a meeting at the International Union of Electrical Workers.
Rep. Khanna’s Congressional Oversight
Rep. Ro Khanna visited Dayton to oversee conditions at Fuyao. Serving as the ranking member on the House Select Subcommittee on the Chinese Communist Party, Khanna invited Fuyao to provide comprehensive information on various issues, including wage suppression and labor law violations. Despite his request, Fuyao sent a single letter, inadequately addressing the committee’s questions.
Khanna expressed disappointment in Fuyao’s response, suggesting that the lack of transparency might indicate the company has concerns it wishes to conceal. Although he sought permission to visit the Lorraine, Ohio factory, the company did not grant access.
A former employee discussed the company’s resistance to unionization, recounting the use of scare tactics and temporary pay raises meant to dissuade union votes.
Handling of a Tragedy
Darrell, another former worker, spoke of a tragic event involving Ricky Patterson, a 57-year-old colleague who died in an industrial accident. Despite this incident, the factory resumed operations, causing distress among employees. This decision shocked those attending the roundtable discussion.
