Explosive-Laden Drone Discovered at Leipzig/Halle Airport

A drone containing explosives was discovered and defused at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany, according to authorities on Wednesday. This incident led to the temporary closure of runways at the major freight hub, causing some flight diversions.

The drone was found near the airport’s south runway, and an explosive disposal robot was called in to handle the situation. Regional police and prosecutors clarified that an airport employee had found the drone carrying an “unknown explosive device.” The drone’s detonator was successfully removed.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt visited the site and commented on the threat’s seriousness. He stated that while drone threats are known, a drone with explosives at an airport is a “new threat scenario.” Dobrindt also labeled the event as a “hybrid attack scenario” but did not specify who might be responsible. An ongoing investigation will explore the details of the drone’s origin and the explosives.

Authorities are also investigating a possible second drone that may have collided with a freight plane during an aborted landing. This plane, initially headed for Leipzig/Halle, redirected to Hannover Airport due to the runway closures, where slight damage was found.

The north runway at Leipzig/Halle reopened after two hours, while the south runway was undergoing scheduled maintenance. There was no threat to passengers or employees, and flight operations during the day continued as usual.

Photos from the scene showed technicians using an explosives-disposal robot near a Ukrainian aircraft, highlighting the airport’s role as a major cargo hub. NATO acknowledged the incident but directed further inquiries to German authorities.

In a related historical incident at the airport in 2024, an incendiary device aimed at a logistics center was suspected to be part of a plot involving Russian intelligence. Such events underscore the ongoing security challenges linked to regional geopolitical conflicts.
