The F.B.I. has launched an investigation into security concerns surrounding a Qatari-donated jet used by President Trump. This move follows reporting by The New York Times indicating potential security risks associated with the aircraft.
According to individuals familiar with the inquiry, F.B.I. agents have sought to speak with several people who traveled on the plane to Turkey with President Trump last week. Some of these individuals were asked to provide their mobile phones for examination.
Among the people investigators are trying to reach are members of the U.S. Secret Service who accompanied Mr. Trump on the trip. The Secret Service has instructed its officials to direct any external inquiries to their legal representatives.
“The Secret Service leadership instructed officials working for the agency to refer any outside requests to their lawyers,” said two people with knowledge of the investigation.
The investigation intensified after the administration issued subpoenas to several Times reporters, demanding their testimony before a grand jury in Manhattan. The Times has condemned this action, viewing it as an attempt to intimidate journalists.
Administration officials stated that the inquiry, led by F.B.I. Director Kash Patel and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, aims to identify sources who disclosed information about security issues related to the new Air Force One. This topic was covered in two recent articles by The Times.
Despite requests for comment, both the F.B.I. and the Secret Service have remained silent on the matter.
