Far-Right Republicans Block Defense Bill Over Voting Legislation Dispute

Far-right House Republicans halted progress on an essential defense policy bill on Tuesday. This action strengthens a legislative blockade designed to push for voting restrictions championed by President Trump.

The impasse paralyzed the House for a second week, adding to Speaker Mike Johnson’s difficulties in rallying his majority to act on vital legislation related to the Pentagon, spending, and other areas.

The confrontation highlights a party conflict over Mr. Trump’s insistence on a comprehensive measure to restrict mail-in voting and enforce rigorous voter registration and identification requirements.

While many Republicans generally support the idea, the legislation does not have enough backing to proceed in the Senate. Multiple GOP lawmakers in Congress have argued that the focus should shift to other issues.

Despite this, Mr. Trump has persisted, and a conservative faction in Congress has opposed any other business until the voting measure is addressed. This effectively freezes the House floor in an attempt to pressure the Senate.
