Authorities report a fatal shooting in Apopka, Florida after a man attempted to intervene in a roadside altercation. The man, Daryl Alexander Hill, age 56, was allegedly shot by Raul Lionel Vazquez, age 26, who is now facing charges of second-degree murder.
According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the incident at 8:27 a.m. at an intersection near Orlando. Hill was found with a gunshot wound and was quickly taken to a hospital. He was pronounced dead at 9:20 a.m.
Reports indicate that Hill was caught up in a dispute after Vazquez and a woman, identified as Kaidy Honaker, were involved in an altercation following a car crash between their white Chevy Silverado and a black Lexus. Witnesses saw them fighting outside the vehicle.
Hill, riding nearby on a bicycle, stepped in to intervene. This led to a physical confrontation between him and Vazquez. According to a police affidavit, the fight escalated with Honaker joining in briefly in an effort to separate Hill from Vazquez.
After a scuffle in nearby bushes, Hill tried to leave, reportedly shouting for help with his hands raised. Vazquez is accused of retrieving a shotgun from his truck and firing a single shot that struck Hill.
Vazquez, who provided investigators with varying accounts of events, was out on bond for a prior aggravated assault charge involving a deadly weapon. Records show this earlier case involved the use of a gun on November 13, 2025. Vazquez pleaded not guilty and had been granted a $5,000 bond.
In another case linked to domestic violence in March 2025, Vazquez allegedly strangled an individual, resulting in arrest. He denied the charges.
Officials say that Vazquez did not have legal representation on record at the time of his most recent arrest. Calls to the Ninth Judicial Circuit’s public defender’s office have not been returned.
The Apopka Police Department, which handled the earlier assault case, refrained from commenting on the bond decision, attributing it to the state attorney’s office. No response has been received from the State Attorney’s Office for the Ninth Judicial Circuit.
