Fatal Train Collision in Central Spain Raises Safety Concerns

4 hours ago 0

In a tragic event on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2026, a high-speed train collided with another train that was stopped, leading to the derailment of two cars and resulting in at least 10 fatalities in central Spain. Authorities fear the death toll might increase.

Esther Padilla, spokeswoman for the Castilla La Mancha region, confirmed the current death count, emphasizing the likelihood of further casualties. Spain’s rail system operator, ADIF, reported the incident took place in Toledo province, with rail services suspended between Madrid, Ciudad Real, and Andalusia.

Padilla, speaking to state broadcaster TVE, described the accident involving two high-speed trains traveling in the same direction from Madrid to Seville. One train ran into the back of the other, causing two cars to derail. The reason for the collision remains unidentified.

The accident involved a train operated by Spain’s state-owned company RENFE and another by the private rail company IRYO. These two companies previously experienced a fatal crash in January, raising concerns about rail safety.

At the time of the collision, 397 passengers were aboard the RENFE train, and 147 were on the IRYO train. Manuel Galán, mayor of neighboring Urda, informed Spanish broadcaster TVE about injuries among passengers. The town is preparing a sports pavilion to assist those affected, as requested by civil protection authorities.

The regional president of Castilla La Mancha, Emiliano García-Page, announced via social media platform X that he is heading to the incident location to oversee the situation.

Earlier in January, a train accident in southern Spain resulted in 45 deaths when a train derailed and collided with an oncoming train. This recent collision is the most fatal railway incident since the 2013 accident that caused 80 deaths, thus testing the confidence in Spain’s extensive high-speed rail system.
