Federal Investigators Examine Florida Jet Crash

48 minutes ago 0

Federal investigators are analyzing the components of a private jet that crashed in Florida, uncovering crucial parts scattered miles from the crash site.

Details of the Crash

The Learjet 60 departed from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport at 10:37 a.m., en route to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas. The aircraft crashed in Palm Beach County around 1 p.m., resulting in the loss of all passengers on board.

Key Discovery

Investigators recovered a critical part controlling the plane’s pitch in three separate pieces. One segment was located nearly four miles from the crash site. Thomas B. Chapman from the National Transportation Safety Board revealed this significant finding on Tuesday.

The left tail elevator, a key piece of evidence, was found scattered between 1.3 to 3.8 miles from where the aircraft went down. Chapman indicated the part might have detached before the crash. Investigators aim to determine if its separation contributed to the crash or if it resulted from external forces acting on the plane.

Expert Insights

Former NTSB investigator Greg Feith commented on the debris suggesting an in-flight breakup, potentially caused by pilot attempts to stabilize the aircraft. Feith noted, “You can see that the airplane leveled off at about 8,000 feet for a very short period of time,” indicating possible over-stressing of the aircraft’s structure.

Victims of the Crash

Among the nine people killed were Adam Robinson, 45, a tech entrepreneur from Austin, his wife Helen Sharp, 40, and their young children, Emma, 4, and Charlie, 2. The family was accompanied by their nanny, Anita Maria Cetina, and family friends, Rachael Reed and Charmi Fehr. The aircraft’s captain, Jeff Gregory, 55, and co-pilot Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, 20, also perished.

Weather Investigation

Federal investigators are focusing on weather conditions as a major aspect of the investigation. The crew reported icing and moderate turbulence at 35,000 feet before the aircraft rapidly lost altitude.

While the jet was equipped with a cockpit voice recorder, it has not been recovered, leaving its presence on board at the time of the crash uncertain, according to NTSB officials.
