Fetterman Criticizes Democratic Response to Supreme Court Defiance

Senator John Fetterman from Pennsylvania has expressed concern over the Democratic Party’s silence regarding New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s refusal to adhere to a Supreme Court ruling. Fetterman argues that ignoring court decisions could lead to a constitutional crisis and highlights what he perceives as a double standard within his party.

The controversy centers on the Supreme Court’s affirmation of former President Donald Trump’s authority to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian and Syrian migrants. Mamdani has vowed not to comply with this ruling.

Fetterman, appearing on the show “Saturday in America,” emphasized the potential for a constitutional crisis when a city leader openly defies the Supreme Court. He pointed out that Democrats previously warned of a constitutional crisis during the Trump administration, yet are now quiet about Mamdani’s defiance.

“I haven’t seen the concern from my party now that the mayor of New York is saying he’ll defy a Supreme Court ruling,” said Fetterman to host Kayleigh McEnany.

Fetterman stressed the importance of adhering to court decisions for maintaining democratic integrity and expressed disappointment in the lack of outrage from fellow Democrats. According to Fetterman, members of his party are either defending Mamdani or not addressing the issue at all.

The Supreme Court’s recent rulings, including Mullin v. Al Otro Lado and Mullin v. Doe, give the Trump administration the power to limit asylum claims and revoke TPS without judicial delays. These two decisions provide pathways for reducing asylum seekers and revoking temporary protections for some migrants in the U.S.

Mayor Mamdani communicated through a video that his administration would never accept the ruling from the Supreme Court. This stance has led to concerns about the Democratic Party’s tilt toward more progressive policies, as voiced by Fetterman and others.

Senator Fetterman’s comments arrive amid a backdrop of tension within the Democratic Party, with other political figures across the country debating the party’s direction. Fetterman and other centrists are wary of the growing influence of politicians like Mamdani, who have gained momentum within the party.
