Francesca Hong’s Progressive Campaign for Wisconsin Governor

Francesca Hong, endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America, is a leading Democratic candidate for governor in Wisconsin. She previously expressed in a now-deleted post on X that Americans should reconsider celebrating Thanksgiving. Hong stated, ‘Cancel Thanksgiving. Should have done this in 1621,’ emphasizing her view on the historical impact of colonialism and its devastating effects on indigenous populations.

Hong’s comments, made originally in November 2020, highlight her progressive ideology as her candidacy gains traction in the Wisconsin gubernatorial race. These views have sparked online discussions, including comments from conservative podcaster Stephen Miller, who noted her use of inclusive language like ‘Folx.’

Hong is likely to secure the Democratic nomination. Her campaign emphasizes support for working-class individuals and aligns with policies advocated by progressives like New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Key proposals from her platform include race-based grants for social workers, publicly funded grocery stores, and a state-run bank. These ideas have contributed to her growing support with the primary election approaching.

Recently, a resurfaced post from 2019 drew additional attention and mockery. In the post, Hong recounted a personal experience at Culver’s in Black River Falls, where she felt uncomfortable among what she described as ‘many old white people.’ This has led critics, including former White House Communications Director Alex Pfeiffer, to question her suitability for statewide office in Wisconsin.

The race took a dramatic turn when Mandela Barnes, the former lieutenant governor, exited the contest. Barnes, previously seen as a frontrunner due to his connections with the outgoing Governor Tony Evers, is under investigation for alleged misconduct, which he denies. With Barnes out, the focus is on Hong and Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley as the primary contenders.

Hong benefits from endorsements by progressive figures such as Rep. Ilhan Omar and Rep. Ro Khanna. As of late June, she has raised nearly $709,000. Meanwhile, Crowley, supported by local organizations and Gov. Evers, has gathered around $250,000. The gubernatorial primary is slated for August 11.
