The Alabama Public Service Commission has recently emerged as a contentious topic ahead of upcoming runoff primaries. With discussions centered around data centers and electricity costs, solar power has added a new dimension to the debate, particularly in Alabama.
Reported by David W. Chen, along with photographs by Audra Melton, the coverage highlights insights from communities across Alabama like Wetumpka and Stockton, alongside De Soto, Georgia. Issues surrounding solar energy and data centers are pivotal in the Alabama Public Service Commission elections.
Jim Zeigler, as a young college student in the early 1970s, was instrumental in organizing voters against Bull Connor, a prominent civil rights opponent in Alabama. Connor, known for his aggressive tactics, had switched from direct action to a position at the Alabama Public Service Commission. In 1972, Zeigler played a key role in removing Connor from the commission, subsequently winning a seat himself two years later.
Fast forward fifty years, these commission seats are desirable again due to the intense national discussion about artificial intelligence data centers. As Zeigler competes for a commission seat, he positions data centers as adversaries. He adds solar power to the list, taking a critical stance against efforts aimed at reducing climate-warming carbon emissions.
“Alabama is being targeted by huge data centers, solar farms, and carbon capture operations,” Zeigler noted during an event held by the Elmore County Republican Party. “If anyone tries to convince you that these developments are beneficial due to employment and economic growth, reassure them that you understand the truth.”
The perceived connection between solar power and data centers depends largely on personal viewpoints. Concerns are unified among Republicans and Democrats regarding the massive consumption of resources by these data centers, resources deemed vital for ordinary Alabamians.
Meanwhile, President Trump has notably opposed solar power and, generally, renewable energy sources.
