Gavin Newsom’s Call to Invoke the 25th Amendment Against Trump Sparks Controversy

California Governor Gavin Newsom stirred significant online debate by suggesting the use of the 25th Amendment to address President Donald Trump’s alleged cognitive issues. This proposal came after Trump’s speech on election integrity. Newsom remarked that Trump’s speech was reminiscent of a ‘mad king,’ lacking only in conspiratorial tin foil.

Newsom’s statement aligned with previous Democratic calls to scrutinize Trump’s mental acuity. However, it also faced criticism for what some considered hypocrisy, given Democrats previously dismissed similar concerns about former President Joe Biden’s capabilities.

The 25th Amendment, established in 1967, permits the President’s removal if deemed unfit by the Cabinet or an independent body set by Congress. Critics argue that the line of reasoning is inconsistent since similar concerns about Biden were ignored.

The Republican National Committee’s social media responded critically, arguing Biden’s mental capabilities were overlooked despite widespread concerns. Fox News contributor Joe Concha also expressed skepticism over Newsom’s stance on Biden’s presidency, suggesting Newsom should refrain from comment.

In his Thursday address, Trump highlighted supposed vulnerabilities in the election system, claiming to have newly declassified documents revealing Chinese interference. Trump’s administration argued that these issues were known but remained undisclosed to the American people.

Fox News could not independently verify the documents shared by the Trump administration. Democrats, including Newsom, questioned Trump’s motives, suspecting an attempt to influence upcoming elections.

Republican Assemblyman Joe Patterson and other conservatives raised issues about the effects of removing a sitting president. They stress the importance of adhering to democratic processes.
