Melat Kiros addresses the assembled members of the Colorado Democratic Party at a unity rally in Denver on July 2, 2026. Her victory in the Colorado 1st Congressional District marks a significant moment as she becomes the first Gen Z woman to serve in Congress.
Kiros, a 29-year-old Ethiopian immigrant and lawyer, secured a decisive win in this reliably Democratic district, encompassing most of Denver. This victory follows her surprising triumph over 15-term incumbent Diana DeGette in the Democratic primary. Voter dissatisfaction with established leadership and a demand for political transformation were palpable in this recent electoral upset.
Kiros is among several successful candidates on Tuesday who received backing from the Democratic Socialists of America or its local branches. These candidates, including Kiros, advocate for policies aiming to enhance the social safety net, such as Medicare for All and universal childcare. They also support more controversial measures like the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and halting U.S. military assistance to Israel.
Her critique of Israel and the ongoing conflict in Gaza sparked controversy during her campaign. Shimon Blau, an independent candidate in the race, accused her of antisemitic rhetoric. Kiros countered these allegations, stating that her criticisms target the Israeli state and not the Jewish people.
Kiros’ election adds a rare Gen Z presence in Congress, as the average age of lawmakers has been decreasing but remains dominated by older generations. As Democrats face growing calls from their base for generational change, Kiros’ youthful perspective is timely. In an NPR interview earlier this year, she emphasized the appeal of her policies to young voters. “Young people recognize we’re in a critical battle,” she remarked. “We need leaders pushing for bold policies that achieve tangible results, without waiting or asking for permission.”
Currently, Maxwell Frost from Florida is the only other congressional member under 30, having been elected as the first Gen Z member in 2022.
