Global Ocean Temperatures Hit Record Levels

Rising Ocean Temperatures

Global ocean temperatures, excluding polar regions, reached record highs on June 21. According to the Copernicus Climate Change Service, temperatures hit 20.86 degrees Celsius (69.54 degrees Fahrenheit). This surpasses the temperature levels recorded in both 2023 and 2024. The Copernicus Marine Service measured temperatures at 21 degrees Celsius (69.8 Fahrenheit), besting previous records by 0.1 degree Celsius.

Richard Allan, a climate science professor at the University of Reading, attributes this to increasing greenhouse gas emissions resulting from burning fossil fuels. These emissions hinder the Earth’s ability to release heat into space.

Impact of Fossil Fuel Emissions

Oceans absorb over 90% of Earth’s excess energy caused by fossil fuels like oil, coal, and gas. Rising temperatures highlight the severe effects of climate change, alongside the influence of El Niño, as described by Allan.

A heat wave is anticipated to hit parts of the U.S. before the July Fourth weekend. The National Weather Service placed over 46 million Americans under extreme heat alerts. Highs could reach mid-to-upper 90s, with some areas exceeding 100 degrees.

Regions such as the Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast are expected to experience record-breaking high temperatures. Parts of Canada may also face extreme heat conditions.

Heat Waves in Europe

Europe witnessed broken heat records last week, and WHO Chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reported over 1,300 excess deaths since June 21 due to high temperatures in the region. France’s national health ministry confirmed around 1,000 excess deaths the week before amid the heat wave.

Climate change contributes to nearly annual occurrences of ‘once-in-a-generation’ heat waves. Europe is the fastest-warming continent globally, warming at twice the rate of the global average. Homes, workplaces, and schools are ill-equipped to handle such temperatures.
