GOP Senators Support Darline Graham Nordone’s Appointment

Republican senators expressed strong support for Darline Graham Nordone, sister of late Sen. Lindsey Graham from South Carolina, to temporarily fill her brother’s Senate seat. Sen. Roger Marshall affirmed Nordone’s capabilities and values, saying, “She will do a great job. She’ll represent the same values that he represents.” He emphasized her intuitive understanding of her brother’s political stance.

Sen. Lindsey Graham passed away due to an aortic dissection, prompting South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster to appoint Nordone. Her term will end on January 3. GOP members have praised her for her readiness to continue Graham’s work in the Senate. President Donald Trump, a close ally of McMaster, endorsed Nordone’s appointment under South Carolina law.

Sen. Kevin Cramer expressed the importance of the Senate’s continuity, stating, “The country needs to continue. The Senate needs to do its work. And I think choosing who Governor McMaster chose to replace him is perfect.” He and other senators highlighted the importance of Nordone’s role and her deep connection with Graham.

After losing their parents at a young age, Lindsey Graham became Nordone’s legal guardian, adopting her to ensure she received his military benefits. Graham’s role as a mentor and guardian to Nordone is widely recognized among his colleagues.

“Everybody’s loving that,” Sen. John Hoeven said, commending Nordone’s appointment. “Darline really was the light of his life.”

Nordone’s appointment restores the Republicans’ 53-seat Senate majority, which was temporarily reduced by Graham’s passing. The bipartisan respect Graham earned across the Senate was highlighted by Sen. Cramer, who said, “There’s probably 99 senators right now saying he was one of their best friends.” Marshall shared similar sentiments, highlighting Graham’s hospitality.

A special primary election is scheduled, starting with a one-week filing period beginning July 21 and election day on August 11. Potential candidates, including Reps. Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman, have started preparations for possible campaigns. Should there be a need for a runoff, it would occur on August 25, giving nominees two months to prepare for the general election on November 3.
