Gunshot Incident Near Notre Dame Campus Injures Two

A gunshot during a post-tailgate fight near Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, left a woman and a police officer injured on Saturday night. The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. ET as crowds were leaving the university’s tailgating areas, moving towards Eddy Street Commons.

Authorities reported a male suspect was seen with a gun, pointing it at people. However, when South Bend Police located a suspect fitting the description, he was unarmed.

As approximately 20 South Bend Police Officers were working in Eddy Street Commons and responding to that call, a single gunshot was heard near Eddy Street and Angela Boulevard, South Bend Police stated in a Facebook post.

Police found a woman with a non-life-threatening leg wound and a police officer with an injury possibly caused by a ricochet or shrapnel. Both were transported to a local hospital and are expected to recover fully. The officer was reported to be “doing fine,” and the woman was “okay.”

According to reports, the suspected shooter fled the scene and remains at large. The suspect is described as a heavyset Black male with dreadlocks, wearing blue shorts, a black shirt with a red and blue design, and missing one shoe.

Following the shooting, police evacuated nearby businesses and parking garages. The commercial district experienced a lockdown as the police conducted an active investigation, advising the public to avoid the area while the scene was secured.

On the same night, another shooting occurred about a mile away, resulting in two fatalities and another person critically injured. There was no immediate connection between the incidents, according to police reports.
