Hakeem Jeffries Criticizes Trump’s Conduct at World Cup Final

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, a Democrat from New York, criticized President Donald Trump’s behavior at the World Cup final, describing it as disgraceful. Jeffries remarked that Trump appeared unwanted during the trophy ceremony.

Jeffries shared these thoughts at a press conference with House Democratic leaders, during which they discussed their midterm agenda. On the same day, the House passed a resolution intended to limit Trump’s military actions against Iran.

Trump faced boos when entering the field at MetLife Stadium following Spain’s 1-0 win over Argentina. FIFA President Gianni Infantino tried to move Trump off stage as Spain celebrated with the trophy, but Trump remained, performing a short dance.

This wasn’t the first instance of Trump drawing attention at sports events. Previously, during the Club World Cup final, he stayed on stage unexpectedly.

Trump’s Frequent Sports Appearances

Trump’s participation in Sunday’s World Cup is part of a pattern of attending major sports events throughout his second term. Since returning to office in January 2025, he has consistently been present at high-profile occasions such as football, baseball, wrestling, and soccer events.

His appearances include the Super Bowl in New Orleans, the Daytona 500 in Florida, and numerous other events like the NCAA wrestling championships and a LIV Golf tournament. Trump also attended a New York Yankees game, the Ryder Cup, and an NFL match.

Basketball was also on Trump’s schedule as he attended Game 3 of the NBA Finals in New York. Of all sports, soccer drew the most consistent interest. Trump’s role in establishing a task force for the 2026 FIFA World Cup showcased his connection to soccer.

Trump’s World Cup Involvement

The tournament itself exceeded expectations, attracting a record 6.8 million spectators. This attendance marked a new high, surpassing the previous record set in 1994. Television ratings followed suit, with record-breaking U.S. audiences for the group stage and semifinals.

Although Trump was not in the foreground for much of the tournament, opting to skip the group stage, his re-entry for the final occurred amid a successful event execution.

The quality of play contributed to the buzz, with an average of 2.94 goals per game, the highest since 1970. The tournament saw 11 comeback victories, higher than any previous World Cup.

Spain’s victory over Argentina in the final achieved historic viewership. Fox’s broadcast reached 38.937 million viewers, marking it as the most-watched English-language soccer broadcast in the U.S. Including all platforms, the total audience was 66.4 million, one of the largest since 1998.
