Hites Brothers: From Turfed Patio to St. Ignatius Football Stars

47 minutes ago 0

Reid and Connor Hites share a common football journey as brothers. Growing up in Lincoln Park, they didn’t have the typical backyard. Instead, they played on a turfed patio atop their garage, surrounded by netting for safety. Connor recalls their childhood games wearing oversized Bears jerseys and pads, tackling each other with enthusiasm.

Reid is now a junior and the starting quarterback for St. Ignatius. Connor, initially a receiver, has transitioned to a hybrid linebacker role, showcasing leadership as a senior in defense for the Wolfpack, who hold a ranking of No. 13 in the Chicago Tribune’s top 25.

Connor received several Division I scholarship offers, among which West Virginia was notable, but chose Penn in the Ivy League, aligning with his father, Kevin’s, Brown football legacy. At 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, Connor may not appear intimidating, but Coach Matt Miller commends his fit in modern college defense. Connor’s role as a college nickel reflects the evolution from traditional linebackers to agile defenders who can cover ground efficiently.

Miller praises Connor’s fearlessness: “He’s flying into contact like nobody I’ve seen.”

Reid faced adversity last year with a broken arm in the Week Zero scrimmage—a practice now discontinued by the Illinois High School Association. Despite a challenging regular season, he recovered to lead St. Ignatius to a Prep Bowl victory over Morgan Park. Reid’s claim of confidence post-recovery solidified his position as quarterback.

Recent seasons saw St. Ignatius experiencing playoff success, reaching the semifinals and quarterfinals in different classes. Their placement in the CCL/ESCC Blue brought tough competition, contributing to two losing seasons. This season, assigned to the CCL Orange, the team holds a record of 5-1, earning victories against notable opponents like Fenwick and St. Rita. Their upcoming challenge is against No. 2 Loyola.

Reflecting the high standards and expectations, Connor is optimistic about the season. “With a chip on our shoulder after the last seasons, everyone expected this outcome,” he stated confidently.

St. Ignatius is acclaimed for academics and its stunning practice field view of the Chicago skyline. Reid mentions their adaptation to city life, sharing their journey from California roots to embracing urban living for their father’s career.
