A trade vessel navigating the Strait of Hormuz reported being hit by a projectile late overnight. The incident occurred on Tuesday while the vessel neared the coast of Oman. It was reported to the U.K. Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), in the midst of rumors of Iran engaging in peace discussions with the U.S. this week.

President Donald Trump stated on Monday that an agreement to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz and pursue Iran’s denuclearization was ‘imminent.’ However, details about the ship’s incident were sparse. According to the UKMTO, the vessel was struck by ‘an unknown projectile’ around 2 a.m. local time, approximately 23 miles northeast of Al Khasab, Oman. The vessel’s name, flag status, and any potential injuries remain undisclosed.

British maritime security firm Ambrey confirmed the damage to the ship but provided no additional details. The event aligns with ongoing tensions, as Iran refuted involvement in talks with the U.S., despite statements indicating otherwise.

Majed al-Ansari, a Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman, confirmed that all parties were pursuing mediation and seeking a diplomatic solution. Meanwhile, a representative from Iran’s foreign ministry denied U.S. negotiations, asserting Tehran’s discussions centered solely around the Strait of Hormuz with Oman.

President Trump expressed frustration at the conflicting narratives, asserting through various statements that Iranian officials were participating in discussions with the U.S., despite their public denial.

Trump remarked on the situation via Truth Social, noting that although talks were taking place, Iranian officials were denying any discussions, emphasizing their engagement with Oman instead.

The media captured a satellite image showing an oil slick near the Caroline Bezengi, a sanctioned vessel off Oman’s Dhofar Governorate coast, adding context to the current maritime tensions.
