A 32-year-old man, identified as Sammuel Lackey, was accused of breaching security at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport early on Sunday, August 2, 2026. He allegedly climbed over a fence and entered an empty JetBlue aircraft that was undergoing maintenance.
According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, Lackey was discovered sleeping aboard a 2012 Airbus A320 during a routine inspection by JetBlue employees. The aircraft was parked at JetScape Services, located at 350 SW 34th St., with its left rear door open for maintenance access. Lackey reportedly used the portable stairs to gain entry and hid in the plane’s bathroom.
The doors of the aircraft were secured at approximately 4:25 a.m., but about an hour later, staff found Lackey inside. This incident caused a disruption in the airline’s operations, as the aircraft could not proceed to its scheduled gate. A substitute plane had to be used, leading to a service interruption valued at $2,400.96 by JetBlue.
Lackey admitted to authorities that he climbed the fence to reach the secure areas of the airport. He faces charges of burglary, criminal mischief, and interfering with critical infrastructure. As of Wednesday, Lackey was being held at the Broward Main Jail on a $10,000 bond. Court records did not list an attorney for him at that time.
Requests for comments from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and JetScape Services were not immediately answered as of Wednesday night.
