Investigation into Lion Deaths in Tanzania Points to Poisoning

Ten lions were found dead in Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Conservation Area, leading wildlife officials to suspect poisoning. Ngorongoro is a renowned wildlife reserve attracting tourists from around the world and is inhabited by pastoral tribal communities.

A statement from The Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority indicates the lions may have ingested poison. An investigation has been launched to uncover the cause of the incident and identify those responsible.

The deaths of these lions highlight ongoing concerns about wildlife poisonings in East Africa. Animals in the region are increasingly threatened due to human conflicts. In Kenya, a similar investigation is underway after 18 elephants died from suspected poisoning. Police detained four individuals related to the case. Preliminary tests suggested cyanide ingestion, although the local tomato farmers deny its use.

Tanzania boasts the largest lion population in Africa, accounting for roughly half of the world’s wild lions. Despite this, the species remains vulnerable due to habitat loss and poaching threats, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, legally protected internationally. It features the Ngorongoro Crater and hosts the Big Five game animals: elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo, and rhinos.
