In Ithaca, New York, a renewed investigation is underway regarding an alleged rape case from 2024 involving students at Cornell University. The decision follows a lawsuit filed by the alleged victim, known as Jane Doe, in the Supreme Court of New York earlier this month. She claims that several men drugged and raped her for over four hours at a Cornell fraternity house in October 2024.
Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten announced the reexamination of the case in a detailed statement. Once his office reviews the facts, a grand jury will consider the appropriate charges. A seasoned prosecutor specializing in sex crimes has been appointed to lead the preparatory efforts.
Cornell University responded to the renewed investigation by affirming its support for the decision. The university’s Vice President for University Relations, Kyle Kimball, emphasized that a comprehensive Title IX investigation occurred over several months without any criminal charges. However, the university conducted hearings with trained faculty and staff, which led to expulsions and suspensions. Specific individuals involved were not named.
The fraternity chapter, Xi chapter of Chi Phi, affiliated with the individuals involved, was banned from campus two years ago following the emergent details. Doe’s lawsuit targets seven alleged perpetrators, the fraternity, and Cornell University. Her legal team has not commented on the case.
The case has attracted widespread social media attention, leading to public demands for accountability. Van Houten acknowledged public outrage, explaining that the civil lawsuit’s claims differ significantly from Doe’s initial sworn statement in 2024. Her earlier account described voluntary involvement in drug use and sexual activities. Van Houten pointed out that his office’s previous decision was based on the information available then, not the allegations in the later civil suit.
No communication from Doe’s attorneys has reached the district attorney’s office to revise the previous account. Van Houten has reached out to Doe’s legal representatives to address the inconsistencies.
