4 days ago 0

Incident Overview

An Amazon cargo plane overshot the runway at Miami International Airport last week. The accident occurred on September 6, involving a Boeing 767, which carried Amazon packages. The plane went approximately 1,300 feet beyond the end of the runway, colliding into a van. Tragically, five individuals in the van lost their lives, and five others sustained injuries.

Amazon’s Response

Following the incident, Amazon announced the suspension of its partnership with 21 Air, the operator responsible for Flight 7598. Kelly Nantel, an Amazon spokesperson, stated that Amazon is dedicating efforts to support the investigation and everyone impacted by this event. Amazon’s partnership with 21 Air had been active since 2024.

Investigation and Safety Measures

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is conducting an investigation into the crash. Aspects under scrutiny include the jet’s ownership history, weather conditions, maintenance records, and 21 Air’s operational procedures. A preliminary report from the NTSB revealed that one of the pilots warned of excessive speed during the landing approach. The cockpit audio also recorded auto-generated warnings related to runway terrain and descent speed. A detailed transcript of the conversation will be forthcoming in the investigation.

Background of the Aircraft

The Boeing 767 involved was manufactured 32 years ago. Initially designed to transport passengers, it served various airlines internationally for over two decades. In 2015, the aircraft underwent conversion to function as a cargo plane.
