Iran Launches Drones and Missiles Amid Escalating Tensions in the Persian Gulf

Iran launched drones and missiles on Sunday targeting Bahrain and Kuwait in response to U.S. airstrikes that hit the Islamic Republic. Iran warned that ongoing American attacks could lead to a complete standstill in peace talks directed at ending the war. The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz without Iran’s direct oversight triggered crossfire, endangering long-term ceasefire negotiations.

A multinational maritime organization, under U.S. Navy oversight, announced on Saturday plans to expand a route near Oman in the Strait of Hormuz, escalating tensions with Tehran. The Strait, though located in Iranian and Omani territorial waters, has been regarded as international waters by the global community. Iran attacked vessels on a U.N.-backed route on the Omani side of the Strait. Tehran argues that post-war, it should solely control the Strait, a critical passage for a significant portion of the world’s oil and natural gas.

“Any interference in this matter, any attempts to establish arrangements separate from what is current, will only complicate things further, delay the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and increase tensions,” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi remarked in Baghdad.

The U.S. and Iran are still debating terms for a provisional peace deal, including vessel passage through this strategic location, lifting U.S. blockades, and addressing Iran’s enriched uranium reserves. Under a memorandum signed earlier this month, the two nations have 60 days to finalize terms.

U.S.-Iran attacks endanger this agreement’s completion. Meanwhile, ongoing conflict in Lebanon threatens the deal, with an Israeli soldier killed by Hezbollah early Sunday.

Kuwait’s military reported intercepting Iranian drones and missiles after earlier U.S. attacks. Bahrain’s Ministry of the Interior stated Iranian attacks damaged a residential building near the international airport, sharing images of vast destruction. Bahrain condemned the attack as a systematic aggression by Iran.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard claimed liability for both Bahrain and Kuwait attacks.

U.S. retaliatory strikes followed, targeting Iranian military installations after an Iranian drone struck a merchant vessel near Oman. Former President Trump announced on social media further U.S. strikes on Iranian assets, warning of possible severe military actions.

Hezbollah continues to clash with Israeli forces in Lebanon, challenging U.S.-Israeli peace efforts. This unendorsed agreement by Hezbollah or Iran continues to see violence, with Israeli operations aimed at dismantling Hezbollah forces and securing territory in southern Lebanon. Sporadic battles persist, with Hezbollah asserting its stance against Israeli occupation.

Despite a decrease in Israeli attacks since the Iran-U.S. deal in June, violence in Lebanon persists. Recent Israeli airstrikes have resulted in fatalities, while Hezbollah attacks on Israeli troops continue.
