The geopolitical dynamics in the Middle East have shifted as Iran’s attacks on U.S.-allied Jordan have escalated. These attacks, such as the recent one that resulted in the deaths of two U.S. servicemen, have introduced new complexities in the ongoing conflict.
Jordan’s role in U.S. military operations against Iran has intensified. This shift occurred while other allies in the region limited Washington’s access to their bases and airspace. Historically, the United States and Jordan have collaborated closely on military, intelligence, and counterterrorism efforts. Jordan hosts significant U.S. air bases, becoming increasingly pivotal as the Pentagon redeployed troops from Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar to more stable locations in Jordan and neighboring Israel.
Jordan’s strategic position grew as other American allies reduced their cooperation. This change in dynamics increased Jordan’s involvement, driven largely by its dependency on U.S. foreign aid. Unlike resource-abundant Gulf nations, Jordan cannot easily refuse U.S. decisions due to its reliance on the security agreement maintained with Washington.
As Omid Memarian, an Iran analyst at DAWN, noted, Gulf countries like Saudi Arabia might hesitate to allow broad U.S. operations from their bases following Iran’s retaliatory actions. Jordan, influenced by its significant agreement with the U.S., remains more bound to comply.
In response to specific threats, Jordan evacuated crucial infrastructure like the international airport and seaport in Aqaba. Jordanian air defenses successfully intercepted three Iranian missiles targeting the nation, with another missile landing in a sparsely populated area.
The unfolding events highlight the delicate balance of power and dependence in the region, emphasizing Jordan’s critical role amid changing alliances and increasing tensions.
