Islam Makhachev Defends Title and Considers Next Opponent

1 hour ago 0

Islam Makhachev successfully defended his UFC Welterweight Championship against Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330 on Saturday. He won by unanimous decision, with judges’ scores of 49-46, 49-46, and 48-47. This victory prompted questions about who his next opponent might be, as Carlos Prates is eager to challenge Makhachev for the title.

Carlos Prates was present at the event in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After the fight, a video surfaced in which Prates sends a strong warning to Makhachev. He stated, I will knock you out, bro. I will bring that belt to Brazil. The first welterweight champion from Brazil.

Prates is currently on a three-fight winning streak. His latest victory was a third-round TKO against Jack Della Maddalena in May at UFC Fight Night in Perth, Australia. His last defeat came from a unanimous decision loss to Machado Garry last April at UFC on ESPN.

Ranked number one among welterweights in the Meta UFC Rankings, Prates has 24 wins, 7 losses, and no draws. With 19 career knockouts, he stands out as a strong candidate for Makhachev’s next opponent. However, some believe Makhachev would have an advantage due to Prates’ weaker wrestling skills. Makhachev’s elite grappling and submission abilities could pose challenges for Prates if taken to the ground.

Makhachev addressed potential challengers, indicating he may prefer to fight Prates next. He commented on the contenders, saying, Honestly, if you ask me today, Shavkat is not fighting; Prates still fighting, still active, and maybe Prates. Because Morales also is good, but I don’t know last time, I don’t remember when he fight. If you ask who is more deserving, I think Carlos Prates.

Makhachev, 34, expressed a desire to fight sooner rather than later because of his age. This suggests Prates might be next in line if an arrangement can be made.
