The UnPopulist, an independent publication committed to defending liberal democracy against authoritarianism in the U.S. and internationally, has highlighted a recent survey result from the Institute for the Study of Modern Authoritarianism (ISMA). The survey indicates a significant shift in attitudes among voters who supported Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential elections.
Since the 2024 election, Harris supporters have shown increased skepticism towards American elites. The latest populism survey captured this change in sentiment. In August 2024, prior to the election, 59% of potential Harris voters strongly believed that at least one of six identified American elites acted against the interests of people like them due to selfish pursuits. This percentage rose to 69% among those who confirmed voting for Harris by June of this year.
This 10-point increase marks the only statistically significant change among the four populist attitudes monitored by the ISMA survey. The report suggests that while Harris supporters have not shown increased allegiance to political leaders or acceptance of authoritarian measures, their skepticism of elites continues to grow.
