The Israeli national soccer team paid tribute to victims of the October 7, 2023, terror attack by wearing black armbands during their Nations League match against Ireland. The armbands featured the date “7.10” to commemorate the tragic event, which resulted in the loss of over 1,000 Israeli lives.
Prior to the match, the Israel Football Association announced that UEFA approved their request to wear the armbands, honoring the victims. This occurred during heightened tensions between Israel and Ireland. The latter’s soccer association has faced pressure to boycott games against Israel due to the country’s response to Hamas’ attack.
Despite support for Palestine, Ireland has refrained from boycotting matches with Israel, fearing UEFA sanctions. In a previous encounter, Irish players protested by refusing to shake hands with Israeli players and wearing black armbands.
During the recent match in Backa Topola, Serbia, Irish players again refused handshakes and protested with armbands. An encounter happened at a pre-match press conference when Israeli journalists questioned Ireland soccer’s communications manager, Kieran Crowley, about racism allegations.
Crowley responded fiercely, labeling the allegations as untrue. The press conference wrapped up shortly after this exchange.
