Israeli Ambassador Criticizes NYC Mayor’s Protest Calls Ahead of Netanyahu’s UN Visit

Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, branded New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani as disruptive before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s scheduled appearance at the U.N. General Assembly. Danon criticized Mamdani after the mayor encouraged New Yorkers to protest Netanyahu’s address at the general debate on September 24.

Danon expressed discontent with Mamdani’s approach. According to Danon, Mamdani should welcome global leaders and ensure smooth city operations. Instead, he accuses the mayor of inciting disruption.

“He is inciting, he is sowing chaos into the city,” Danon stated. “This year, it will be harder for New Yorkers or visitors due to the mayor’s calls for demonstrations. Nonetheless, the prime minister will attend, speak, and represent our nation.”

The mayor’s office did not respond to questions regarding possible interactions with Netanyahu during his visit.

Previously, Mamdani described Netanyahu as a “war criminal” and criticized his actions concerning the Palestinian people. Despite his campaign promises, Mamdani acknowledged he lacks authority to arrest Netanyahu.

Protest as Part of New York’s Culture

In response to whether New Yorkers should protest Netanyahu’s visit, Mamdani highlighted protest as a core aspect of New York City. He noted its role in allowing residents to express support or dissent on any issue.

“One of the bedrocks of our city is protest,” Mamdani said, emphasizing the city’s commitment to upholding the First Amendment.

Netanyahu, in an interview on “Hannity,” declared his intent to confront Mamdani’s divisive rhetoric during his New York visit.

Danon remarked on Israel’s ongoing challenges and future prospects. He stressed the importance of dealing with Hamas in Gaza, citing a need for disarmament and future stability.

The ambassador also discussed Israel’s broader achievements, defending the country’s actions at the U.N., citing their fight against Iran and Hezbollah as symbolic of defending Western values.

Danon concluded with confidence in their accomplishments, stating that Israel walks “very proud” at the United Nations.
