An Israeli strike on Friday resulted in at least seven deaths and several injuries in central Gaza, hospital officials reported. This strike is part of a recent increase in attacks within the region.
The Israeli military stated that the operation targeted members of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the second-largest militant group in Gaza. The military acknowledged claims that some ‘uninvolved individuals’ might have been harmed during the strike. ‘The results of the strike are under review,’ the Israeli military added in their statement.
Despite a U.S.-backed cease-fire agreement signed with Hamas in October, Israel has heightened its military actions against Gaza. Israeli authorities assert that these actions are focused on Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad militants involved in the attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. This attack resulted in 1,200 fatalities and 251 abductions, leading to the current conflict in Gaza.
Hamas, managing a major part of Gaza’s population, condemned the Friday strike as an ‘ugly massacre.’ They claimed the strike hit a funeral procession, though they did not specify whose funeral.
Awdeh Hospital reported receiving casualties from the strike, confirming the death toll of seven. Dr. Mohammed Salha, a physician at the hospital, noted that another person died in a separate incident that same day.
Osama Hmaid, 39, a resident of Nuseirat where the strike occurred, mentioned multiple Israeli strikes in his locality over recent days.
