Istanbul: A Growing Hub for Tango Enthusiasts

Istanbul has firmly established itself as a burgeoning center for tango. Numerous tango schools and clubs in the city, coupled with highly skilled dancers, have solidified its reputation as a global tango destination. Even Argentine maestros recognize the city’s significance in the world of tango.

A notable event this month was a milonga, or social dance, held at the Istanbul Modern art museum. This event highlights the vibrant tango culture thriving in Istanbul.

A Turkish ‘Abrazo’

Ben Hubbard and Safak Timur, along with visual insights by Laura Boushnak, explored the tango scene by interviewing Turkish and international dancers and teachers. They attended various tango events throughout Istanbul, gaining a comprehensive perspective on its rise as a tango capital.

The Turkish dancers, Ozan and Tugce Buyukakincioglu, are emblematic of Istanbul’s tango spirit. At a recent event, they faced each other with intense focus. Ozan, clad like a soldier, and Tugce, striking in a sequined gown, moved in perfect harmony to the nostalgic strains of a classic tango ballad.

The couple performed at an international dance competition in Istanbul, amid similarly dressed pairs all competing for the judges’ attention. This competition is among the many events showcasing the city’s vibrant tango scene.

Istanbul’s Increasing Recognition

While Istanbul is renowned for its scenic waterways and historic architecture, its tango culture is gaining acknowledgment among dance aficionados. The city is increasingly seen as a global tango capital.

Tango events like the finals of the La Turca Tango Marathon and Championship highlight the city’s prominence in tango. These events serve as a testament to Istanbul’s thriving dance community.
