1 hour ago 0

Naperville North junior linebacker Jake Brooks finds solace in the outdoors. ‘I love to go camping,’ he shares. He often visits Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness in Manistee National Forest, Michigan, near where his grandparents reside. Brooks enjoys camping with friends and family, embracing nature entirely.

Despite his love of nature, Brooks is a force on the field. Opponents struggle against the 5-foot-11, 210-pound linebacker. Naperville North’s defensive coordinator, Chris Arthurs, remarks, ‘Jake attacks and flies to the ball.’

This season marks a breakout year for Brooks, in his second varsity season. Naperville North, with a 6-1 record, leads the DuPage Valley Conference, securing playoff qualifications. Brooks collaborates with senior linebacker John Lyons, forming a formidable duo.

Brooks has recorded 31 tackles, with seven for losses, and leads the team with four interceptions. He recovered his first fumble against DeKalb, setting up a crucial touchdown in their 42-14 victory, extending their winning streak to six with an average of 9.8 points allowed per game.

‘He studies film and practices diligently,’ says Arthurs. Hailing Brooks’ dedication, he adds, ‘Jake makes plays for us all year.’

Brooks ranks third in team tackles, a testament to his offseason preparation. ‘Me and John had effective offseasons, pushing ourselves and our team,’ Brooks explains. Against DeKalb, the starting defense limited the opponents to 123 yards over just under three quarters.

In the game, Brooks and Lyons both recovered fumbles, with Lyons scampering 30 yards for a touchdown. They forced three turnovers during the game. Lyons praises Brooks for his versatile athleticism. Brooks handles punting and kickoff duties, averaging 36.3 yards per punt and notching 14 touchbacks from 33 kickoffs.

‘Jake’s skill set surpasses expectations,’ Lyons asserts. Brooks shines not only as a linebacker but also for his versatility, filling gaps with notable hitting power.

Brooks’ football skills are nurtured not inherited, unlike his passion for nature. ‘My family has mostly soccer players and wrestlers, but I’ve paved my path in football,’ Brooks reveals. Dedication to training has bolstered his size and strength.

Arthurs sees college football as a feasible goal for Brooks. ‘His experience, size, and strength align with collegiate potential,’ Arthurs believes. Brooks focuses wholly on football, having set aside basketball and baseball by the end of his freshman year.

I love the passion of the game. The more effort you invest, the greater the rewards.

Brooks envisions a promising season. ‘We aim for a state championship,’ he asserts, confident in the team’s potential. Matt Le Cren provides freelance reporting.
