James Talarico’s Historic Victory in Texas Senate Race

53 minutes ago 0

Democratic state Representative James Talarico has made history by winning the U.S. Senate race in Texas. The Associated Press has confirmed his victory. This win ends a thirty-year streak of Republican control over statewide offices in Texas.

Talarico’s opponent, Republican state Attorney General Ken Paxton, had the backing of millions in fundraising efforts and was a strong ally of former President Trump. This race was closely watched and substantially funded, highlighting the significance of Talarico’s win.

Trump frequently targeted Talarico in national rallies, positioning him as a symbol of Democratic policies. Despite this, Talarico’s success marks a significant setback for the Republican Party and Trump himself.

Ken Paxton had never lost an election since his 2002 entry to the Texas House of Representatives. After defeating incumbent U.S. Sen. John Cornyn in a Republican primary runoff, Paxton secured the nomination with Trump’s endorsement. However, Trump’s declining popularity may have negatively impacted Paxton’s campaign.

Talarico, a seasoned lawmaker from Austin, consistently polled ahead of Paxton since mid-year. His fundraising efforts were strong, surpassing Paxton for most of the year, although conservative super PACs supported Paxton with substantial ad spending in the campaign’s final stages.

Talarico first gained notice in 2018, flipping a traditionally Republican district in favor of Democrats. His background as a San Antonio middle school teacher and Presbyterian seminarian influenced his platform. He emphasized education and criticized attempts to bring religious teachings into public schools.

His opposition to a law mandating the display of the Ten Commandments in classrooms furthered his reputation as a vocal advocate. This law is currently challenged by multiple federal lawsuits.

Gaining national attention in 2025, Talarico appeared on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast and later on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Although CBS didn’t air the latter, the interview gained fame online, increasing Talarico’s recognition and strengthening his fundraising ability.

Paxton faced challenges beyond the campaign, including controversies over alleged corruption leading to his 2023 impeachment and subsequent acquittal by the Texas Senate. His personal life also faced scrutiny due to his divorce from state Senator Angela Paxton amid allegations of infidelity.
