Wheel of Fortune announcer Jim Thornton is currently defending himself following his suspension. Represented by his lawyer, Thornton denies engaging in any illegal activities. At 61, he has not been arrested or charged with any crime, according to his attorney’s statement to TMZ.
Sony Pictures Television Studios addressed the situation, acknowledging allegations against Thornton. He has been suspended as the announcer, and a recasting process is underway while an investigation is conducted.
Thornton, who has been the show’s announcer since 2011, encountered the issue during a flight with American Airlines in May. Another passenger’s complaint led to law enforcement meeting him at the gate upon landing at Los Angeles International Airport.
“On May 14, American Airlines Flight 1276 was met by law enforcement upon arrival at Los Angeles International Airport following concerns reported by a customer onboard,” the airline stated.
Thornton’s lawyer elaborated that law enforcement quickly resolved the situation, determining no wrongdoing had occurred, and Thornton was allowed to leave after a brief discussion.
He succeeded Charlie O’Donnell as the announcer of Wheel of Fortune after O’Donnell’s passing in 2010. Thornton’s career includes voice work on programs like Celebrity Death Match, The Cleveland Show, and Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. He has also worked with shows like The Price is Right and Jeopardy!, and has been part of KNX 1070 news radio since 1985.
Throughout his career, Thornton has received accolades such as the Edward R. Murrow Award and an Emmy, as highlighted in his Wheel of Fortune biography.
