A routine traffic stop on a Kentucky interstate on Monday turned deadly when State Trooper Hayden Phillips was shot. The incident sparked a statewide manhunt, which concluded with the suspect in custody.
Trooper Phillips, aged 30, was killed on Interstate 65 in Warren County. He is survived by his wife and three young sons. U.S. Attorney Kyle Bumgarner described the incident as a senseless murder at a press conference held on Monday night. Phillips had joined the Kentucky State Police three years ago, assigned to Post 3 in Bowling Green. He was known as Unit 369 among his peers.
Kentucky State Police Commissioner Col. Phillip Burnett Jr. emphasized their commitment to seeking justice for Phillips. He reiterated their determination to ensure that justice is served for Trooper Phillips.
Initially, the state police reported a trooper-involved shooting along northbound I-65. They sought public assistance in locating a bluish-gray Honda Civic with an Alabama license plate, seen at the crime scene. The wanted individual, Emonnie Branch, was later apprehended by Louisville Metro Police. Branch faces charges of murdering a first responder and will be tried in Warren County.
Burnett condemned Branch’s actions as cowardly and promised to support Phillips’ family through their difficult time. He vowed the department would stand alongside them, ensuring they do not face this tragedy alone.
Governor Andy Beshear praised Phillips as a hero dedicated to protecting the state. State Representatives Brett Guthrie, James Comer, and Morgan McGarvey expressed their condolences and commitments to remember Phillips’ service.
Country singer Lee Greenwood also expressed his sorrow and support for law enforcement officers, acknowledging the loss of Trooper Phillips.
