Kindness at a Cancer Center: How a Valet’s Optimism Made a Difference

2 hours ago 0

Kate Fink is a breast cancer survivor who found unexpected support at her care center in Buffalo, New York. Her gratitude extends to the person least expected: the hospital valet, Jon Avery.

Jon Avery parks cars at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. Known for his joy and contagious optimism, he brings a sense of hope to those undergoing treatment. Avery aims to create meaningful interactions with each patient. He told Fink, day after day, to keep pushing forward. Over time, these words transformed her mindset, motivating her to stay strong.

Fink decided to express her gratitude to Avery for his kindness and encouragement. She learned that attending a Buffalo Bills game was a dream of his. Determined to make it happen, Fink and her colleagues at West Herr Automotive Group pooled resources. They managed to secure game tickets and field passes for Avery.

Although deeply thankful, Avery expressed that the generous gesture was not necessary. He said, “I serve people, that’s what I do. If I don’t have anything else, I know I can live in service.” His humility further underscores the impact he has on those around him, simply by uplifting them during challenging times.
