Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Aidan O’Connell was marked as inactive for the team’s game against the New Orleans Saints. This decision followed the announcement of his father’s death earlier in the week.
O’Connell shared on social media, posting a heartfelt message along with a photo of his parents. The message revealed his deep grief, stating, “It is with immense sadness that I share the passing of my Dad, Jim.” He described his father as a gift and a positive force in many lives. O’Connell and his family are relying on their faith for comfort, expressing gratitude for the support they’ve received.
He quoted the Heidelberg Catechism to convey solace in faith: “’My only comfort in life and death is that I am not my own, but belong—body and soul, in life and in death—to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ,’” adding a personal note: “Rest in peace, Dad. We love you and will miss you more than words can say.”
O’Connell joined the Raiders after being selected in the fourth round of the 2023 draft. In his career, he has participated in 21 games, accumulating 3,932 yards and 20 touchdown passes. Despite starting the season as the third-string quarterback due to the signing of Kirk Cousins and drafting of Fernando Mendoza, O’Connell has shown promise on the field.
