Libertyville’s Academic and Athletic Achievements: A Closer Look

Nick Farmakis and his Libertyville baseball team have achieved immense success on the field, clinching consecutive Class 4A state titles. However, their excellence extends beyond athletics, as the Wildcats’ academic record sets them apart. The American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) recognized Libertyville as one of 20 Illinois high schools, and the sole representative from Lake County, to earn its Team Academic Excellence Award.

Academic and Athletic Excellence

Farmakis emphasizes that attributes contributing to their athletic success, such as discipline, accountability, and time management, overlap significantly with academics. “We all know that if we stay ahead in classes, it paves the way for athletic success,” he shared. The ABCA award requirements are clear: teams must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

Coach Matt Thompson noted the team’s commitment to academics. “Understanding we have great people to work with is a strong start. Academic reports showing students struggling are few,” he added. Players understand that excelling academically fosters further opportunities.

Farmakis’ Academic Journey

As a pre-business student at Indiana University, Farmakis already secured 15 credit hours due to passing multiple Advanced Placement exams. These credits enable him to explore diverse courses. “Having those credits will propel me to take classes I might not have had the chance to take,” he stated.

Libertyville ensured team activities did not conflict with AP exams, which are typically held at the school year’s end. Farmakis, experienced in balancing academics and sports, utilized study halls and bus rides effectively to complete his work.

Farmakis’ Role on the Field

On the baseball field, Farmakis played a crucial though understated role. As a reserve outfielder, he contributed largely as a late-inning defensive replacement and a reliable pinch runner. His efficiency was evident, scoring 24 runs in 20 plate appearances and achieving nine steals in ten attempts. Coach Thompson highlighted Farmakis’ adaptability and team spirit, which significantly contributed to the team’s dynamics.

Farmakis kept a close watch on opposing pitchers, learning to detect their patterns and use the information to his advantage. “I would try to read the pitchers’ tendencies from the dugout,” he explained. This attentiveness paid off during games and was a testament to his strategic thinking.

Although Farmakis spent much of the 2025 season on the junior varsity team, he was elevated to varsity for the playoffs. In a notable moment, his proactive play led to scoring the winning run in a tight 1-0 win over Prospect. A critical play resulted from his aggressive jump and agility, showcasing his quick thinking and readiness.

“That was probably the best result I’ve ever had from getting hit in the head,” Farmakis quipped about a ball that inadvertently helped him score.
