Mythical Creatures Week in Oak Park

The Park District of Oak Park recently hosted ‘Mythical Creatures Week,’ offering a variety of free activities for all ages. One of the main attractions was a cardboard regatta held at Rehm Pool, where participants tested their engineering skills by creating cardboard boats to sail the pool’s length. In addition to the regatta, there were arts and crafts sessions at the Dole Center, including projects like fairies, muppets, and mermaid collages. Visitors also engaged in activities at Austin Gardens, such as creating plaster casts of animal and Bigfoot tracks. A family event took place at Pleasant Home, while strolls through Scoville Park introduced attendees to curious characters and mythical creatures. Educational sessions at Oak Park Conservatory informed participants about local plants and creatures.

Darien Fest Celebrations

The 38th annual Darien Fest is scheduled from August 7 to 9 at Hinsdale South High School, located at 7401 Clarendon Hills Road. Opening ceremonies run from 5:45 to 6 p.m. on August 7, featuring the Veterans of Foreign Wars presenting colors, with assistance from the high school’s marching band and cheerleaders. Entertainment includes Ocean’s Rat Pack performing from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., and carnival games and rides from 6 to 10 p.m. The festival continues on August 8 with activities such as a business expo from 1 to 5 p.m., bingo with Cancer Smashers from 2 to 4 p.m., and live performances by bands like Hinsdale School of Rock, Whiskey Road, and Heartache Tonight. Community Blood Drive in Brookfield

The Brookfield Women’s Club, in partnership with the American Red Cross, is hosting a community blood drive on August 9 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Brookfield Village Hall’s municipal meeting room, located at 8820 Brookfield Ave. The event is open to the public, though appointments are preferred. Immanuel Lutheran Church Food Pantry Schedule

Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hillside is offering a drive-through grocery service for families in need. Distribution takes place at the Put Your Hands Together Food Pantry starting at 11 a.m. until supplies run out on August 9, September 12, and October 10.
