Mexican Mayor Assassinated Amid Ongoing Violence

A mayor in central Mexico was tragically killed inside a town hall, as reported by authorities on Wednesday. This incident follows an earlier assassination attempt on the mayor’s life. The town of Temoac, located in Morelos, a region close to Mexico City, has seen significant cartel activity.

Mayor Valentin Lavin, affiliated with President Claudia Sheinbaum’s leftist party, survived an attempted attack in January. According to the state prosecutor’s office, forensic experts and police found his body in local government facilities. An operation is actively seeking those responsible.

Since 2006, when drug violence surged in Mexico, almost 100 mayors have been killed. Reports indicate that 14 mayors have died since the current government’s start in October 2024, with three fatalities occurring in 2026.

Last November, the country mourned the death of Mayor Carlos Manzo in Michoacan during Day of the Dead celebrations.

Criminal gangs frequently target local officials, especially in regions where cartels fight for control. Recently, the husband of a councilwoman was murdered, and the politician with her daughter was injured as they attended a school event.

President Sheinbaum highlighted a decrease in homicides, asserting that they have dropped by nearly 50% since her administration began in September 2024. Efforts to combat drug cartels in Mexico started in 2006, resulting in nearly half a million deaths and about 130,000 disappearances, according to government data.
