Michael Douglas has addressed a rumor that has persisted for many years. In his upcoming memoir, “One Helluva Ride,” the 82-year-old actor shared that he and Kathleen Turner had an affair during the filming of “Romancing the Stone.” This rumor had been denied by both for over four decades.
Douglas described Turner as “smart, funny, and sexy with a deep, sultry voice that became her signature.” He noted that they were instantly attracted to each other. At the time, Douglas was married to Diandra Luker, but he mentioned that their marriage was troubled, with both engaged in extramarital affairs.
He admitted that he began the affair while filming “Romancing the Stone” in 1984. Despite public speculation about their relationship, Douglas and Turner continued to deny it even during the making of the film’s sequel and later when they reunited on “The Kominsky Method.”
Douglas expressed that their relationship was natural due to working closely together under pressure and mutual respect and attraction. He emphasized that it was more than a brief fling.
The affair remained confidential to protect Luker and their son, Cameron.
The secret was kept from everyone, including the film’s director, Bob Zemeckis, and co-star Danny DeVito. Douglas explained they would often have dinner together or meet in her hotel room discreetly.
The relationship ended when Luker visited the set with their son, making it clear to Turner that Douglas was still married.
Turner responded to Douglas’ revelation by stating, “Good heavens what a fuss about something 40 years ago! I love Michael and look forward to enjoying the book.”
“Romancing the Stone” featured Turner as Joan, a romance novelist who partners with bird hunter Jack Colton, played by Douglas, to rescue her sister from smugglers in Colombia. Douglas and Luker finalized their divorce in 2000, after which he married actress Catherine Zeta-Jones. They have two children together: Dylan and Carys.
