Minnesota’s Senate Race Highlights Immigration Debate

Around a federal office complex near the Minneapolis airport, tensions over President Donald Trump’s immigration policies have risen. U.S. immigration agents assembled here, prompting protests against a deportation campaign. These activities have become central to Minnesota’s Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate, featuring U.S. Rep. Angie Craig and Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan.

During the deportation efforts, two protesters were killed, causing Trump to withdraw under mounting pressure. This backdrop influences the primary, where the immigration debate is a focal point. Protesters helped bring attention to these issues, revealing divisions similar to other national Democratic contests.

Craig, initially supporting strict immigration enforcement, regretted this decision as Trump’s administration heavily staffed Minneapolis with agents. Her opponent, Flanagan, uses this to argue that Craig lacks the fight against unsettling administration measures.

Craig expressed regret for her support of the Laken Riley Act, a law mandating the detention of migrants accused of serious crimes. In light of aggressive enforcement in Minneapolis, she acknowledged her mistake in supporting the bill and its implications.

Craig’s political strategy has often been about winning difficult races. However, facing criticism from the left is new for her. She has adapted her language to appeal to more progressive voters, emphasizing the struggles of the working class.

Raised in Arkansas by a single mother, Craig struggled economically, later advocating for progressive issues. She has actively engaged in calls for change within the Democratic Party, highlighting her suitability for a burgeoning anti-establishment sentiment.

Conversely, Flanagan criticizes Craig’s previous immigration stance as a betrayal, preferring consistent support for immigrants. Flanagan has received support from progressive leaders like Sen. Bernie Sanders, emphasizing grassroots funding over large donors backing Craig.

The Republican contenders feature Michele Tafoya, adding complexity to the political landscape. While current Democratic Gov. Tim Walz has not endorsed a candidate, his wife supports Craig, underscoring internal party dynamics.

Money plays a significant role in the primary, with Craig outspending Flanagan. Despite discrepancies in funding, both campaigns attract substantial outside investment, reflecting the race’s importance and the broader national implications.
