Medina’s Leadership in Mount Carmel’s Playoff Journey
Throughout Mount Carmel’s playoff pursuit to return to state competition for the first time in 11 years, Mario Medina has been a key figure behind the plate. This senior catcher keeps the team composed and motivated through his quiet leadership. Medina’s commitment to bringing the Caravan back to state was unwavering, describing the experience as a significant moment. ‘It was a big game and a special moment,’ Medina reflected. ‘I’ve been with these guys for four years, and they are like my brothers.’
Semifinal Highlights Against Libertyville
In the semifinals, Medina did his best to elevate Mount Carmel against defending Class 4A champion Libertyville. He contributed one of the team’s three hits and executed a critical defensive tag at home plate, but the Caravan fell short in a 3-1 defeat at Slammers Stadium in Joliet. Connor Elenteny, a Notre Dame recruit, struck out five in six innings for Mount Carmel (30-11), surrendering three earned runs on six hits. Joey Ireland, committed to Illinois, delivered with a double and an RBI walk, while Logan Fernandez of Triton added a base hit.
In the seventh inning, Mount Carmel kept battling, narrowing the score to 3-1 following several walks and Vazquez being hit by a pitch. Despite loading the bases, a fly-out by Fernandez ended their comeback attempt.
Key Defensive Play by Medina and Lajcin
The game featured a pivotal defensive performance from Medina and Haiden Lajcin. In the third inning, with Libertyville runners on second and third, Lajcin caught a fly ball and made a precise throw to home. Medina completed the play with a tag on Libertyville’s Braden Tolzien, maintaining Mount Carmel’s deficit at 3-0. ‘I saw the ball go out there, and I was just thinking, “Four, four, four,”‘ Medina said. It was a crucial momentum shift.
Coach Brian Hurry praised the duo’s effort, describing the play as fantastic. Medina’s influence on the team extends beyond his actions, guiding a skilled pitching staff throughout his career.
Medina’s Impact and Future Games
Elenteny highlighted Medina’s role, declaring him as the biggest leader on the field. ‘He’s been like a rock for our team,’ Elenteny stated. Mount Carmel boasts a group of seniors with several years of varsity experience. Their time as a team culminates with one more game together on Saturday as they take on Naperville Central (30-10). Coach Hurry acknowledged the lasting impact these players have had on Mount Carmel’s tradition.
