NASA and Russian Crew Complete 241-Day International Space Station Mission

On July 26, 2026, two Russian cosmonauts and a NASA astronaut concluded a 241-day mission on the International Space Station (ISS) with their return to Earth. They landed on the steppe of Kazakhstan after a successful atmospheric reentry.

Return Journey

Commander Sergey Kud-Sverchkov, flight engineer Sergey Mikaev, and NASA astronaut Chris Williams departed from the ISS at 3:03 a.m. EDT. Their Soyuz MS-28/74S spacecraft detached from the Russian Rassvet module and moved away from the station.

Approximately two-and-a-half hours later, the spacecraft’s braking rockets activated, ensuring a controlled descent. It touched down near Dzhezkazgan, Kazakhstan, at 6:27 a.m. EDT. The mission spanned 241 days, covering 3,856 orbits and 102 million miles since its launch on November 27.

Landing and Recovery

Following landing, recovery teams swiftly assisted the crew as they adjusted to Earth’s gravity. The crew members were provided with medical checks, fresh fruit, and opportunities to contact family and friends. Kud-Sverchkov expressed gratitude, stating, “I am feeling better and better with each moment.”

The crew received Russian matryoshka dolls as gifts. A playful comment accompanied the presentation, suggesting the dolls contained vodka. After the festivities, the crew was transported to Karaganda by helicopter. From there, Williams began his journey back to the Johnson Space Center in Houston, while his Russian colleagues headed to Star City, near Moscow.

Mission Highlights

Chris Williams participated in two spacewalks, contributing to robotic repairs and solar panel preparations. Kud-Sverchkov and Mikaev also completed a maintenance spacewalk on the Russian segment of the space station.

Before the flight, Williams praised his crewmates, noting their kindness and curiosity. The mission marked the first spaceflights for Williams and Mikaev, while Kud-Sverchkov completed his second, having previously served on the ISS in 2020-2021.

The ongoing station crew includes NASA Commander Jessica Meir, Jack Hathaway, ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot, and cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev. The recent departure allowed Soyuz MS-29/75S members Pyotr Dubrov, Anna Kikina, and NASA’s Anil Menon to join the station.

Williams’ Journey to NASA

Williams, prior to his astronaut selection, was a volunteer firefighter and an emergency medical technician. He earned a Ph.D. in astrophysics from MIT and worked as a medical physicist at Harvard Medical School. Joining NASA’s astronaut corps in 2021 fulfilled a childhood dream.

While aboard the ISS, Williams spoke about his fascination with space and exploration since childhood. He noted his deeper appreciation for Earth’s view from space. He expressed a desire to explore the moon, emphasizing the unique perspective the human eye can provide.
