National Mall Event Marks 250th Anniversary with Prayer and Patriotic Speeches

1 month ago 0

On May 17, 2026, thousands gathered on the National Mall for the ‘Rededicate 250’ event. This event, held on a Sunday, featured a mix of religious and patriotic activities. Supporters saw it as a reaffirmation of faith in America. Critics, however, argued that it blurred the line between religion and politics.

The program included participants from various backgrounds. Trump administration officials, conservative Christian leaders, and musicians took part. The aim was to ‘solemnly rededicate our country as One Nation Under God’. Attendees from across the country viewed the gathering as a response to a perceived decline in religious values in public life.

One participant, Debra DeGuiseppi from Minnesota, expressed concerns about a societal turn away from faith. She described a ‘spiritual attack’ on the nation. Joe Johnson from Asheville, North Carolina, emphasized faith’s importance in the country’s future, stating, ‘Without God, we’d go nowhere.’

Speeches were given by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La. Additionally, more than a dozen Christian faith leaders and a rabbi offered remarks.

There was also some criticism of the event. The Rev. Paul Brandeis Raushenbush of the Interfaith Alliance argued that it promoted a narrow view of American religious identity. He suggested that this event did not celebrate the religious diversity of the nation.

President Donald Trump’s administration has increasingly shown support for visible religious symbols in public life. This includes prayer circles in the Oval Office and initiatives addressing perceived anti-Christian bias. Previously, Trump’s social media featured a now-deleted post depicting him in a Christ-like manner, which he claimed represented him as a doctor.

The event was organized by Freedom 250. This Trump-backed group plans a series of events leading up to the 250th anniversary of the nation.
