NATO Jets Respond More Frequently to Russian Aircraft Near Eastern Flank

2 hours ago 0

NATO reported a significant increase in the scrambling of its fighter jets in July compared to the same month in the previous year. The heightened activity occurred along the alliance’s eastern borders.

On Wednesday, NATO explained that Russian military aircraft frequently flew close to NATO airspace. These flights lacked a flight plan and transponder signals, which prompted NATO fighter jets to launch from their bases for interception. Transponders are crucial as they provide details about an aircraft’s altitude and precise location.

In the first half of 2026, Norway, a NATO member, deployed fighter jets 62 times to counter Russian flights on NATO’s northeastern flank, as reported by Newsweek in July.

The Norwegian government disclosed that it detected more Russian aircraft near its airspace in just the first six months of the year than in any full year since 2021. Such close encounters between military aircraft are not rare, but Russia dispatching advanced bombers near NATO’s borders is perceived as a strategy to intimidate.

In related developments, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday that United States intelligence assessments suggest Russia might attempt a “limited” assault on a NATO country in the coming years.

This story is still developing. More updates will be provided as information becomes available.
