New Hampshire Senate Race: A Contest of Momentum and Uncertainty

1 hour ago 0

Progressives are counting on a last-minute surge to propel Karishma Manzur in the Democratic primary for the New Hampshire Senate race. However, Representative Chris Pappas maintains a lead in both polls and prediction markets.

New Hampshire stands as a Democratic-leaning swing state, tilting towards former Vice President Kamala Harris by a slim margin in the 2024 election. It remains the most closely contested New England state. With Senator Jeanne Shaheen retiring, both political parties view the race as extremely competitive.

Democrats hope the national mood, marked by strong anti-Trump sentiments, will secure the seat. Meanwhile, Republicans bank on former Senator John Sununu’s candidacy to add unforeseen competitiveness to the race. Recent polls underscore a statistical tie between candidates.

Tuesday’s primary will set the stage for the general election. While Pappas remains the frontrunner, progressives aim for an upset by Manzur as a tightening race is indicated by a poll from the University of New Hampshire.

Sununu is leading in the Republican primary against former Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown.

Polling Insights: Chris Pappas vs. Karishma Manzur

The latest independent poll from the University of New Hampshire indicates Pappas ahead by 13 points over Manzur, standing at 47 percent to 34 percent. This poll surveyed 2,143 New Hampshire citizens, including 881 likely Democratic primary voters, with a margin of error of 2.1 percentage points.

The race has narrowed from previous UNH polls which showed Pappas leading by significantly wider margins. For comparison, UNH previously reported leads of 24 points in June, 43 points in April, and 54 points in January.

Other polls display similar trends, with a Saint Anselm College poll indicating Pappas up by 31 points, polling at 59 percent to Manzur’s 28 percent among 733 likely Democratic voters. The margin of error here was 3.6 percentage points.

A GQR poll from Pappas’s camp saw him ahead by 56 points, polling 71 percent over Manzur’s 15 percent, surveying 422 Democratic voters.

Pappas Favored in Prediction Markets

Prediction markets show Pappas with a strong 98 percent likelihood of winning against Manzur.

Republicans Look to Granite State

Republicans perceive increasing competitiveness in New Hampshire following polls revealing Sununu and Pappas closely matched for the general election.

A GOP poll by Fabrizio, Lee & Associates showed Sununu narrowly leading Pappas, with support at 37 percent over Pappas’s 36 percent. This study polled 600 likely voters with a margin of error of 4 percentage points.

The UNH poll also shows a tight race, with Sununu leading Pappas by 2 points. However, some polls still favor Pappas, like a Saint Anselm College survey where Pappas leads Sununu by 7 points.

No general election polls have tested Manzur’s performance as the Democratic nominee, leaving her potential match-up with Sununu speculative.

The Strategic Importance of New Hampshire

New Hampshire counts as a closely divided state, with voters leaning slightly towards Democrats in federal elections. However, Republican governors have been consistently elected in state races.

Independents play a pivotal role in the state’s political landscape.

Voter registration data from August shows 351,815 unaffiliated voters, alongside 299,976 registered Republicans and 247,069 Democrats.

In the 2024 elections, the state narrowly favored Harris, while providing a larger margin for Biden in 2020.

Can Democrats Flip the Senate?

Should New Hampshire’s Senate seat turn Republican, it would complicate Democrats’ efforts to overturn the Republican majority. Republicans currently hold a 53-47 Senate majority.

Democrats seek to pick up seats in swing states such as Georgia and Michigan.

Moreover, they view GOP positions in Maine and North Carolina as opportunities. Their path would challenge them to win in more conservative states like Alaska, Iowa, Ohio, and Texas.

If New Hampshire flips Republican, Democrats would face increased pressure to win a majority.

The Path Forward

Forecasters rate the Senate race as Lean Democratic. Tuesday’s primary will begin deciding the future direction, with voting hours varying across municipalities.
