New York Magazine’s First Men’s Style Issue Stirs Debate

New York Magazine has launched its inaugural men’s style issue, marking a first for the publication by featuring transgender actor Elliot Page. The issue, headlined “The Men’s Style Issue,” explores the magazine’s history of covering men’s fashion.

The magazine highlighted its past coverage, mentioning a 1971 cover story that questioned men’s willingness to wear high heels and a 1996 profile of male supermodels noted for their appeal and openness about their sexuality. Additionally, from 2006 onwards, the women’s fashion issue partly focused on men’s style, featuring personalities like Thom Browne and covering metrosexual trends.

The magazine believes the current fashion environment, where 15-year-olds are enthusiastic about designers like Ralph Lauren, warrants a special issue. This issue explores influential figures in men’s fashion, new emerging talents, and the enduring presence of former male models.

Among several covers, the issue includes one featuring Page. The accompanying article, “The Boys in the Baths,” describes activities in the East Village’s Russian & Turkish Baths. Page shares personal reflections on bathhouse experiences and his enjoyment of singing in the shower.

Political commentator Link Lauren criticized the cover’s focus on Page, arguing it detracts from traditional masculine representation. Expressing concerns about the diminishing portrayal of masculinity, Lauren suggested the cover might prioritize controversy over actual fashion discourse.

Media watchdog NewsBusters’ executive editor Tim Graham also criticized the magazine’s choice, questioning the relevance of featuring Page in a men’s style context. He suggested that the magazine’s move aligns with broader trends in media that emphasize progressive themes.
