Two officers who were involved in defending the U.S. Capitol during the January 6, 2021 riot have initiated a federal lawsuit. Their action aims to prevent the Trump administration from establishing a fund estimated at $1.8 billion.
The fund in question is intended to compensate individuals who argue they were victimized by what they describe as a ‘weaponized’ legal system.
Officers Harry Dunn and Daniel Hodges have raised concerns that this fund violates federal law. They argue that such a fund could empower and legitimize political violence.
Significantly, this is the first known legal challenge to the fund.
This lawsuit highlights a critical legal and ethical debate concerning how funds and legal measures could impact political and societal dynamics.
In the past, Dunn and Hodges, along with officers Michael Fanone and Aquilino Gonell, testified before a House panel regarding the January 6 events.
