Two police officers who defended the U.S. Capitol during the January 6 attack have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration. They aim to stop the creation of a nearly $1.8 billion fund they claim rewards rioters and violent right-wing groups.
Details of the Lawsuit
Former Officer Harry Dunn of the U.S. Capitol Police and Officer Daniel Hodges of Washington’s Metropolitan Police are the plaintiffs. They allege the Trump administration set up a “slush fund” to support insurrectionists and paramilitary groups.
The lawsuit names former President Trump, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent as defendants. The officers argue the administration overstepped its legal authority by establishing the fund without Congress’s approval.
Fund’s Purpose Disputed
Trump administration officials claim the fund will compensate individuals unfairly targeted by the Biden Justice Department and Democrats. However, the fund has faced criticism, even among Republicans. Opponents view it as a way to channel taxpayer money to support Trump’s associates.
The lawsuit states, “Although Trump and his cronies have been secretive about the fund’s ends, reporting leaves no doubt that it will be used, among other purposes, to pay the nearly 1,600 people charged with attacking the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.”
The White House has referred requests for comments on the lawsuit to the Justice Department, which has yet to respond.
