Oliver Gilbert Wins Democratic Primary to Succeed Frederica Wilson

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Oliver Gilbert has secured victory in the Democratic primary to replace retiring Rep. Frederica Wilson in Florida’s 24th Congressional District. This district, primarily Democratic, is located in South Florida and includes parts of Miami. Due to redistricting by Florida Republicans, some areas like Miami Beach are now part of an adjacent district.

Wilson, serving since 2011, initially represented Florida’s 17th District before redistricting led her to the 24th. Known for her distinctive wide-brimmed hats, she announced her retirement, leading to a competitive race among Democrats for her successor. Seven candidates vied for the nomination, but House Democratic leaders have largely remained neutral, likely to support Gilbert following his win.

Wilson expressed strong support for Gilbert, stating at a campaign rally, “If I am endorsing you, everybody in District 24 should be endorsing you.” The primary, though competitive, didn’t mirror the high-stakes battles between establishment Democrats and far-left contenders that characterized the 2026 midterms.

Around the country, far-left Democrats, including those linked to the Democratic Socialists of America, have been challenging incumbents and even causing upsets within the party. In Florida, DSA member Oliver Larkin challenged moderate Rep. Jared Moskowitz in a district leaning Republican after redistricting. Meanwhile, self-proclaimed socialist Elijah Manley was one of several contenders against Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who is now running in a majority-Black district following changes to the congressional map.
